Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Hestia & Tonks
WHEN: after Tonks' thing with Ginny
WHERE: Tonks' room
WHAT: angst
RATING: tbd

Hestia had done her best to completely ignore Charlie for the past day or so. How long was it? Oh, she couldn't remember. She was too upset to keep track of time. And then she realized that Charlie should be the one upset, not her. She remembered that Charlie WAS upset. And that just made her more upset. Hestia had probably spent more time crying since their last talk than she had cried in the past four years or so. And she had wandered the ship and wandered the ship looking for Dora, but Dora had disappear.

And then there had been a message. It wasn't the Dora that was here before, but a Dora who knew what had happened. This was a Dora who knew why Hestia had disappeared after she broke Charlie's heart and got kicked out of Auror training. This was a Dora who had seen her come back and actually be useful in the battle... even if it was just keeping Harry's muggles safe and out of the way. But mostly this was a Dora who would understand what Hestia was feeling... hopefully.

After debating for about a half an hour, Hestia headed right for Dora's room. Right where it had been. She went inside, knowing her bff was still out with Ginny. And that was okay. Hes just couldn't stay in her room and risk Charlie coming back again. She had already upset him enough, she didn't want to make it worse. So she climbed in Dora's bed, curled up under the covers, and waited. Okay, so waited wasn't exactly correct considering she fell asleep after five or ten minutes there.

This had to be the strangest day Tonks had ever had in her entire life. Wake up, eat breakfast with Remus, pop over to the shops, come home, walk through the door and emerge on a cruise ship, remeet your dead father, find out your future, and have some delicious spaghetti.

Yeah, not your average day, and it was obviously weighing on her. Tonks felt her eyes prickling with tears as she walked slowly down the hall to her room. Her and Remus, they were going to die and their son would be an orphan and her poor Mum! All she would have was Teddy and while that was nice and well and all, Tonks wanted to be there. She wanted to see him grow up, she wanted to see her friends mature and marry and have kids of their own. She didn't want to miss it! And even if she had to, why couldn't Remus have at least made it? Why did he have to die as well, after all he'd been through. Couldn't he enjoy his life for once, enjoy it with his son. Teddy absolutely adored his father. He always brightened when Remus was around, his hair constantly changed different colors and he laughed a lot. He loved Remus, why couldn't Remus have made it? Why couldn't she at least saved him?

Heaving out a sigh, she took a deep breath and willed herself not to cry. She could figure this out. She always figured things out. Opening her new bedroom's door, she pushed it in gently and spotted a lump in her bed. "Remus?!" she asked, giddy with hope at the thought of her husband being here but then she saw the mess of dark hair and realized it was Hestia and though the relief she felt wasn't the same, it was just as powerful. "Hes!" she called, getting all misty eyed as she went over to the bed and laid down nearly on top of her friend to give her a hug.

Hestia didn't hear the door. Something about the fact that this was Dora's bed, and she was surrounded by Dora's things, and that Dora was coming back soon made her sleep a little deeper. It wasn't until she felt the weight of her best friend that Hestia woke up. And honestly, that wasn't exactly the best way to wake up. But at least Dora was there. That was what mattered. It had been horrible wandering the ship searching and searching for her when Hestia needed her most.

Wiggling around, Hestia wrapped her arms around Tonks and nearly sighed. She was on the verge of tears, not that it was anything new. For half of their lives now Hestia had been on the verge of tears over something or another. There was just a good solid reason for it this time. "I'm so glad you're back. Or here. Or whatever."

Tonks grinned, trying to push her own thoughts aside to focus on Hestia for the moment, even though her thoughts were dark and heavy and hard to keep away. It was like trying to fend off something you couldn't see, couldn't touch. It was lingering and she hated it. Still, she had been quite worried when she had spoken with her earlier. She sounded upset over something and that most certainly did not sit well with Tonks. After all, she was her designated best mate and so it was up to her to fix this, terrible future or no!

"I'm so glad you're here." Tonks said with a sigh of relief, giving her friend an awkward hug before rolling off her to lay next to her. She did, of course, take her hand like she used to do when they were kids and grin over at her. "So what's up? How long have you been here?" Tonks asked, before coming to the startling realization that Hestia could have possibly come from a time after her and so she added in, "When did you come from?"

Hestia couldn't believe how glad she was that Tonks was from the same time she was. Or at least within a few months of it. She had to be. There were only a few months between when Teddy was born and when Dora died. Which was an unhappy thought to be thinking. But she was here now. And it would be better this time. Teddy was somewhere and now he had a mom and a godmom who remembered him. It would be fantastic.

Except that nothing was fantastic. Hestia was thankful for old habits, tucking her hand into Dora's. "I've been here a month or two... or three maybe? I'm not sure." It didn't matter. Time didn't matter here. And apparently the outside world didn't matter too much here either. At least it didn't really affect people who hadn't experienced it. Hestia sighed.

"I'm from the day of the battle..." Hes paused, realizing Tonks probably had no idea what she was talking about. "Well, May something, May first or second, I think, there was a huge battle at Hogwarts. The last thing I remember is Charlie getting hit with a curse. I dove for him and when I hit the ground I was on the ship and Percy was helping me off the ground."

Three months. Merlin. Tonks stared up at her ceiling, thinking about how she really ought to find stick on stars, the kind that glow in the dark. She'd put them up, maybe make a constellation. She smiled a bit, she'd put up Andromeda. Maybe charm another to glow exceptionally bright and name it Sirius. Sirius. Was he on the boat? Tonks sure hoped he was. She missed her cousin.

Merlin, Hes, how are you doing? Holding up alright? Bet you're better now that I'm here." she teased, it was amazing how easily Tonks could easily push aside or rather cover up such strong emotions but she was a loyal and dedicated friend and so that was probably how and why she did it.

Still, at the mention of the battle, Tonks' smile dropped. The Battle of Hogwarts, yes, Tonks had heard of it. It was where she died after all. Where she and Remus would .. die. Tonks felt the lump that had been making itself known all day reappear and she blinked her eyes furiously to fight back a new wave of sadness. She would not cry. She wouldn't cry. No, she wouldn't. "Ginny told me." Tonks said, a bit gruffly then. "About the battle." she offered, not elaborating anymore. "Charlie is okay though, yeah?" she asked directly after, "You and him, you make it?" Please, if there was a God, they would make it. They had to, at least them.

Hestia glanced up when Dora said something about the battle. She was usually pretty internalized, but it would take a pretty bad friend not to read the expression on Dora's face. She sighed and reached out, pulling her best mate against her. "She told you? I'm sorry. I think you told me? Or the other you. The you that was here before." She paused, leaning back so she could look in Dora's face. "Do you remember being so chipper ten years ago? Because you were right bubbly."

Hestia grinned a little and then shook that thought away for a moment. "He was okay. Found out I got myself seriously injured trying to get to him. And then he rushes me off to Romania like some knight-in-shining armor. Ten years without speaking and he thinks that it's perfectly okay to sequester me from everyone so I can heal after the battle. We didn't help with the rebuilding or anything." Hestia sighed, worry lines creasing her forehead. She really, really, really hated that people were from the future here. It made everything so much harder.

Tonks nodded, allowing herself to be pulled against her friend but not really responding to the hug because that meant it would be real and if she accepted it, here and now, she was sure she would start crying and she didn't want that. She was too tired, too emotionally drained. She wanted something else to focus on so she focused on Hestia. Letting out a sore laugh, she nodded. "Oi, I'm still chipper. I get bubblier as the years go by! Poor Remus, he has to live with me." Tonks said, playing off the first bit of their conversation as if it were nothing as she nudged her friend with her elbow a little and gave her a wry smile.

Of course, said smile softened and grew a bit brighter when she found out Charlie and her made it out alright. "Thank Merlin" she breathed, "Thank Merlin you two are alright." she said with a sigh. "And Charlie is a knight in shining armor!" Tonks protested with another small smile, propping herself up on her elbow to look at her friend. "And he's down right dreamy" she teased, "Oh, how dreary Hogwarts would have been without him there during our schooling." she said, wrinkling her nose and grinning at Hestia. She missed Charlie, she really wanted to see him.

"But you heal up alright, yeah? Back on your feet in no time, toddling after my boy." Because she wasn't there to do it but Tonks left that bit out.

Hestia snorted. This is why they made such great pals. When Hestia was down, Tonks cheered her up. And in return, Tonks was cheered herself. And when Tonks was on the verge of crazy needs to be in a loony bin hyper, Hestia was a pretty calming presence. They complimented each other. When they were little it was fantastic because Tonks was bossy and Hestia just went along with it... Of course the amount of trouble the got in was amazing.

"Poor me. I've had to live with you for our whole lives!" She smirked a little and then laughed. She wanted to say something witty about Charlie, but she didn't have the heart. Well, that and she wasn't as quick witted as Tonks. But mostly because it was too upsetting to talk about Charlie right now... Of course she knew better than to think she could get away with that. Charlie was the third in their little friendship trio.

"I healed up, I guess." She paused, burying her face in the pillow. Her voice came out muffled and obviously upset. "Apparently we got married and had a whole gaggle of kids and Teddy came to stay with us in Romania now and again." Hestia was obviously on the verge of tears.

"Ah see but the thing is you, you grew up with this" she said, gesturing to herself, "You knew from day one I was an awful, clumsy thing who talked too loud and got into too much trouble but Remus? He had years of peace until I came along and started knocking his books over and stealing his t-shirts and all that" Tonks said with a bright smile, grinning over at her friend.

Of course, she was relieved to find out that Hes had been alright and gone on with her life and married Charlie. Wait, what?

"OI, I KNEW IT!" Tonks declared, sitting bolt right up in her bed, a proud smile on her face. "I said it what, like 5th year or whatsit. I mean, back then I also said I would grow old alone with a bunch of cats but Remus is sort of like a puppy once a month, you know?" Tonks said, looking over at Hestia then with a big smile on her face before realizing that she was .. upset .. about this? Tonks frowned. "What's wrong?" she asked, laying back down and rolling over onto her side to try and pry the pillow away. "Hes, whatsit?" she asked again softly, trying to prod her friend into telling her.

Hestia was silent a few moments and then actually broke into tears. She covered her face with her hands and buried herself into the pillow. She sucked in a shaky breath, trying to stop crying. Again. It was taking a bit longer this time.

"I don't know what to do, Dora!" She sniffled, her voice still muffled by the pillow. "I broke his heart once. And what if I do it again? And he's here and he wants me to marry him. I can't do that. I can't put him through all that again. He left for Romania when I broke his heart the first time, what if I do it again? What then? He'll probably commit suicide or homicide or something. I just... I can't... and he doesn't even hate me for it!"

"You do what's right by you because that's the only thing you can do." Tonks said softly and seriously, rubbing Hestia's arm and trying her best to soothe her friend. "You have to do that because if you don't, you'll only be playing pretend and that can only last so long." Tonks said, remembering how hard it was for whenever Remus was around and she had to pretend she wasn't dying to leap across the table and snog him senseless. Of course, that started happening before Remus even really knew her and it was entirely different but still! Relateable!

"If you don't want to break his heart, then don't. Don't make the same mistake twice." she said softly because that's what it was, at least in Tonks' eyes. When the whole thing had come to pass, Tonks was in a fluster and didn't know what to do but she always thought somehow, someway they'd be okay and apparently they were. Well, in the real world they were. "If you think you'll do it again, then you seriously need to take a step back and think about it Hes." she said seriously, because she didn't want Charlie to get hurt either. "I don't think you would but I'm not you." she pointed out, looking at her friend and giving her a small smile.

"Well duh he doesn't hate you" Tonks said, always the blunt one. "He loves you." she said, "And if you get married in the future and have truck loads of kids, I doubt you'll do it again, Hes. Not if you want to be with him, not if you love him too." she pointed out.

"Do you love him?" she asked then.

Hestia sighed, trying to stop crying. To keep herself from making an even bigger scene. She didn't mean to be so over dramatic, she just couldn't help it. And this was a pretty intense situation any way you looked at it. Matters of the heart were always especially difficult on Hestia.

"Of course I love him," she mumbled into the pillow. Her voice was soft and muffled enough that she wasn't even sure Tonks heard her. Although Hestia wasn't sure she wanted to be heard. Her best mate was the go-get-it kind of girl. She was very proactive. While Hestia was kind of reactive and didn't often take initiative on anything.

Rolling over, Hestia dropped her arm over her face. It was rather dramatic the way she did it, but not intentionally. She just always seemed that way. "It's not that I don't love him. And it's not that I think I'll want to cheat on him. I didn't want to do it the first time! I just... Dora, you know I can't say no! What if I get in another situation where I can't? I can't hurt him like that again. I can't be the reason his heart smashes into a billion tiny pieces. I've done enough to the man I love, why should I put him through anymore? That's just selfish. I can't be selfish like that."

Twisted logic? Oh yes, Hestia was the queen of twisted logic.

Of course, Tonks had heard it despite the fact that maybe Hestia didn't want her too. It was amazing how some things you wouldn't think the brunette would pick up on got it just like that and other times you practically had to scream at her to get her to comprehend what you were saying. Maybe she just had selective hearing. That's what her Dad had always said when she was growing up anyway.

"Then what's the problem?" she asked, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear as she sat very still, waiting for Hestia to come out with it. And when she did, Tonks couldn't help but be utterly confused. Hestia did have some very twisted logic. Of course, Tonks and Hestia, though best mates, were very different people. Tonks always went after what she wanted and didn't say yes to just say yes whereas poor Hestia did. She had a bigger conscious, Hestia did. That was Tonks' theory at least.

"That is so not a problem" Tonks said firmly then, "That's an excuse." she pointed out as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Leave it to Tonks to take all the sugarcoating off it! "You live and learn, you made the mistake once when you were young and naive, you won't make it again. Plus, if someone is badgering you, I'm a trained Auror you know. Give me a shout and I'll come out of the wood works to defend your honor." Tonks said, obviously teasing but she was serious all the same. "You get married back in the real world and live happily ever after, you can do the same thing here."

Hestia had grown up with Dora. She knew all about her best mate's selective hearing. For instance, when Uncle Ted told them to turn down that ridiculous music. Or Aunt Meda told them that curfew was at eleven. Or Aunt Nessa said no sweets before dinner. Hestia just sort of went along with Dora on those sort of things. Or... well, with most everything actually.

That was her problem. Hestia had no spine. Her emotions tended to overcome her. That's how she'd gotten into the mess with the professor when they were in school. It's how she got stuck with Dawson when she ran off to be a model. And she couldn't risk it again.

"Dora, I'm a mess in relationships. Do you remember Dawson?" Honestly, Hestia couldn't remember when she'd told Dora about her ex-manager. When he'd beaten her bad enough to put her in the hospital, Hestia had called Bill. Sometimes she wasn't sure she'd be alive if Bill hadn't come to get her. And two years later Hestia still had no idea what happened to Dawson. She also hadn't told Charlie about it. Not to her knowledge anyway.

Tonks' face immediately lost all sense of humor which up until recently, rarely happened. Of course, since the war, it had become more and more usual. "Yes, I remember Dawson." she said, spitting out his name. Merlin, she would've liked to get her hands on that guy. Tonks' jaw clenched as she thought back on it. Tonks had taken Hestia under her wing long ago and even though they were the same age -- well, they had been the same age back home - she liked looking out for her, protecting her and it killed her that there had been times when she hadn't been there, hadn't been able to. Dawson was one of those times.

"I know, relationships are difficult." and she did know! Just look at her and Remus! Of course, that was a different kind of difficult because Remus Lupin was, by far, the most complex man she'd ever met in her entire life and she was absolutely, head over heels in love with him. "But, if it's worth it, everything else falls by the wayside." Tonks said gently, "I know, Hestia, you have such a big heart" because she did "and you don't want to hurt anyone ever but think about yourself. Charlie - he made you happy, and he's a wonderful bloke and he wants to be with you, and only you." she said gently, pushing her friends hair away from her eyes in an almost motherly gesture. "That's what matters so if and when you ever happen upon a situation like back at school, you can say no. You can do that, Hes, you can. And if you can't, then I'll always be here to make sure no one takes advantage of that bloody big heart of yours, yeah?"

Apparently Dora was from after Hestia had told her what Dawson had done. It had probably been obvious, to be honest, that Dawson was taking advantage of her. Dora had been the only one close enough to see that he was pushing her around. It just wasn't physical pushing around until about fifth year. And when it started happening, Hestia did her best to hide it. Bill had taken care of her when it got too bad. And then taken care of Dawson. And when the war started getting terrible Hestia's conscious started weighing on her and she'd broken down and told Dora everything.

Hestia sighed. This was all so complicated. Why did it have to be so hard? Was she making it this hard or was it really this hard? Why did it sound so easy when Dora said it? She made things so simple. But Hestia hated it. This whole situation. It was just terrible.

"He does make me happy. But how can I make him happy? I don't think I can." Hestia was running out of arguments. They both knew she was. Sooner or later Dora was going to convince her that she was being silly and irrational.

"How can you make him happy?" Tonks asked, repeating the question. "That's easy, fulfill the future" she said in a semi-eerie voice, "Which is to say, marry him. Well, you don't have to marry him" and the word yet hung in the air but Tonks pushed forward "He just wants to be with you Hes. You don't have to rush into it. You don't have to marry him now but you can try it again. In some other reality, it works out, you get married and live happily ever after with loads of kids who will idolize me from the stories you tell" because Tonks wasn't going to be around but again, she moved on with it. "You make him happy by being yourself, yeah? You don't have to try so hard. Just be you and Charlie, he'll be Charlie and it'll be wonderful. I promise. You've got to try it though Hes, you owe it to yourself. Every relationship is a risk but in the end it's always worth it." she said, marveling at how wise she suddenly sounded and then -- taking a page from Remus' book she quoted "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."

Where was Remus when she needed him? He'd probably spill his tea with that one!

Hestia listened in silence. It wasn't rare that Tonks went on and on. She was a talker. She'd always been a bit of a blabber-mouth. And considering Hestia was usually so mousy, she was used to just listening to Dora. But normally it wasn't a sort of mild scolding.

And usually it wasn't proving to Hestia that she was wrong and very likely paranoid.

Rolling over, Hes huffed and buried her face in her hands. "What if it doesn't work out?" she spoke louder this time, so she could be more easily heard over the muffling of the pillow.

Tonks didn't mean to scold but sometimes she came across that way when she was being blunt or trying to talk sense into someone which was what she was doing now.

Blowing her hair out of her eyes then, she folded her arms over her chest and gave her a look that their third year DADA teacher had given them when Tonks had accidentally melted their cauldron. "Okay Debbie Downer, what if the ship sinks? What if an evil wizard from the dark ages pops on board and turns me into a chipmunk! -- That's just paranoia! -- It's a risk but if you love him enough, you'll take it and I, personally, think you love him more than enough. You're stronger then you give yourself credit for Hes, and given the fact that you're so worried about it now, it just proves to me that you'd never do it again." she said, flopping back down on the bed and trying to pry the pillow out of her hands. "So, what you've really got to ask yourself is do you want to be with Charlie, love him, be happy, skip off into the sunset, all rainbows and flowers? Or do you want to wonder, what if for the rest of your life?" because those were the two options really!

"Give it a go" she added softly then, rubbing her friends arm. "Hes, really."

Hestia was about to roll her eyes as Dora went on her rant. And then she paused, actually cocking her head (still beneath the pillow) to be sure she heard her friend right? "A chipmunk?" Hestia snorted. And then burst into laughter. She knew Dora was still ranting or something, but she couldn't help it. She just kept laughing. Sometimes Dora said the most ridiculous things and Hestia couldn't stay mad or upset when she went on about absolute rubbish like that.

Relinquishing the pillow, Hestia threw her hands up in surrender. "Alright alright. You win. I'm done arguing. I'm just being a prat about the whole thing. I can't help worrying, Dora. I always worry. I think it's something I picked up from Aunt Nessa and Aunt Meda."

Laughter! The battle was over and Tonks had won. Victory was hers and, what's that? She even got the pillow? Huzzah! Grinning at her friend, she ran a hand through her hair before speaking once more.

"Oi, I worry too, yeah? It's understandable to worry especially when you care about something or someone and we both care about Charlie." Tonks said with a grin, hiding her pillow behind her back so Hestia couldn't hide again. "But I don't think you'd do that to Charlie again and if he wants to marry you he obviously trusts you. You've just got to trust yourself, give yourself a little credit. You're absolutely brill, Hes, why do you think we've been friends so long?" she said, teasing her slightly as she smiled down at her friend.

"You have a lot more faith in me than I have in me," Hestia said, though not as negatively as it sounded. It was something that had been going on since they were tots. When Hestia was young and having trouble with bullies, Tonks had convinced her she could stick up for herself. And then promptly beat up the meanies after Hestia had talked herself into a worse situation. It seemed to be a theme with their friendship.

"I think we've been friends so long because my Aunt Nessa and your mum were friends when they were kids." Think. Ha. They both knew it. Nessa took Hestia to Andromeda's house when she went for tea and the two tots had been practically inseparable until Hestia disappeared into the Muggle world in the early nineties.

It still broke her heart that she had waited so long to get close to her best mate after returning to the wizarding world during the war... Mostly because she found out that she got any more time with Dora. At least she was there for Teddy. He was two weeks old when she was yanked on the ship and Hestia wasn't sure she could love a baby more than Teddy. She wasn't sure it was normal to love your best mate's kid like he was your own, but she couldn't help it. Her love for Dora just kind of spilled over on Dora's offspring.

Tonks gave her a disapproving look as she shook her head, "Ay, and since we both know I'm a ruddy genius you should take my word and my faith in you as the Gods honest truth because that's exactly what it is." she informed her in a voice that left no room for question before lightening up a little.

"Yeah but if you weren't the absolute tops I would never have let you share my things or invite you into my many splendid blanket forts, yeah?" Tonks teased with another bright smile as she nudged her friend gently.

"So, are you going to give it a go or will I have to follow you about until some of my good sense rubs off onto you then?" And she would do it! Tonks was a very determined individual.

Hestia reached for a pillow to whack Tonks with, but alas her pillow was gone. Now that wasn't fair. She was unarmed when Dora clearly needed some modesty knocked into her. Gods honest truth her big fat arse... which actually wasn't big. Apparently Teddy hadn't been much to push out.

"You let me into your blanket forts because you were afraid of the dark." Hes grinned. It probably wasn't true, but it was funny. Or at least she thought it was funny. Sometimes Hestia had an odd sense of humor.

Sighing, Hestia tried not to let things get to her right now. Dora was back. And she was the Dora Hestia remembered most recently. It was nice to be happy with her. But she couldn't ignore their whole conversation. "I don't know what I'm going to do, Dora." It really was not an easy situation.

Tonks felt her face tinge pink because - even if Hestia didn't know it to be so - Tonks had been absolutely terrified of the dark when she was younger. She had a nightlight all the way up until school and even then she had some sort of illumination in her bed. She wasn't sure why, maybe she just had innate knowledge to fear the dark or something. She didn't like not knowing what was lurking about! She had, obviously, gotten over it for the most part but that still didn't stop her from whacking Hes in the head with the pillow before quickly tucking it behind her again.

"I let you in because I liked you and you didn't have cooties like the boy down the block who laughed at me when I skinned my knee that time we tried riding bicycles without the training wheels." Tonks informed her with a broad smile and a small nudge. "Take it as a compliment!" Though Tonks had never been particularly picky when it came to making friends, she was when it came to the good ones and Hes was definitely a good one.

Even if she was block-headed sometimes. Frowning, Tonks shook her head. "You, my dear, dear friend, need more sense. If you could only see what I see you'd realize there's absolutely no problem and you two are perfect for each other and I'm sure there's a fantastic sunset the two of you can walk off into shortly."

Of course Hestia knew it. They were tots together. She couldn't be that oblivious. She just wasn't aware it was still a sore subject. When Tonks' face went pink, Hestia narrowed her brows a bit. She felt bad. She hated saying things that might hurt someone. She did her best not to do it if she could help it. Sometimes she just didn't realize it.

"You know, I wonder some times how much Muggle stuff we got to do because Aunt Nessa was a squib. I mean, there's tons of stuff witches don't get to do as kids that we did." Thinking back on it, Hes had to assume it was because Aunt Meda didn't want Aunt Nessa to feel left out. Or maybe it was because Uncle Ted was raised muggle. Either way Hestia always felt like they got the best of both worlds.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Hestia kind of pouted a little. "I have enough sense, thank you. It's confidence I lack." Which was probably the truest statement she'd ever made. "And if you think I'm walking off into a sunset any time soon, you obviously haven't looked outside yet. There hasn't been land in sight since I got here. And I can't walk on water."

They really had had it nice growing up. The best of both worlds didn't even begin to cover it but it was lovely. Tonks was an avid fan of both worlds. Muggle music and fashion, Wizard sports and traditions. It was all wonderful to her! "We had it good." Tonks agreed with a smile. "I really ought to go future searching or something, see what's new out there." she informed her friend with another bright smile. Of course, said smile turned quite stubborn just a moment after.

"Well then, we'll have to work on that so you can get your happily ever after." Tonks said, throwing in a dreamy sigh before grinning. Tonks had never been romantic, she still wasn't, but now she knew what it was like to love someone, totally and completely, so she didn't scoff at it anymore.

"And you can walk down the deck though!" Tonks pointed out which a nod, "Walk down the deck, off into the sunset. I'll morph into a Mum-like figure and get all weepy eyed. It'll be classic."

"Future searching? You mean finding out what happens after... ya know..." After where they came from is what Hestia was trying to say, of course it probably came off as after Tonks died. Which, technically, was the same thing. Hes just didn't like thinking about it like that. She didn't want to realize that if she were to ever be back in her own time, she would never see her best mate alive again. It was depressing.

Rolling over a bit, Hestia turned her face away and mumbled barely loud enough to be heard. "You mean like... finding out I have eight kids." Hestia still wasn't sure how to process that one. She couldn't imagine being pregnant once, let alone eight times. Well, okay, technically five, but still! "I don't know how happily ever after eight kids is."

Tonks shrugged, "Find out what the music and stuff is like 20 years from now .. er .. from 1998." she replied with a smile. "Find out all that cool stuff." she added, completely passing over the fact that she wouldn't ever be there to see it in the main time line but that was neither here nor there.

"Eight kids is bloody brilliant! You should name one after me or at least a middle name or .. no, use Tonks., Tonks Jones-Weasley. It'll be brilliant. I wish I'd been around longer to have more." Tonks informed her friend, breaching the previous subject with a firm nod and a tight smile. There, it had been said, Tonks would die were they to ever leave ship so she was hoping above all hope that she would just .. you know .. stay put.

"I think we did name one after you. I think." Hestia kind of shrugged, still not looking up from where she was trying to hide against the pillowless bed. She was still not real sure about this whole future thing. Especially considering she had eight kids and the first one nearly killed her. That was probably the biggest reason she'd told Charlie no. She wasn't sure she was strong enough to go through all that. This was a Hestia who hadn't gone through the whole war yet. She couldn't have been as strong as the Hestia from his time.

Rolling over, Hestia pulled Tonks into a big hug. "I still can't believe you died. I saw you that day. The day I left and ended up here. I saw you and Teddy and Remus and Aunt Meda. And we came to Hogwarts together and then we split up. And then I saw Charlie get hit..." Hestia sighed. This whole war thing was terrible. Even if that was the last technical day of the war, she just wished it had never happened!

"Really?!" Tonks asked brightly, grinning at her friend. "Oi, that's ruddy brilliant!" she exclaimed happily, beaming over at Hestia. Tonks wanted more kids, more than one but Teddy was absolutely brilliant. He was perfect and she was so happy she had gotten the chance to bring him into the world and hold him and coddle him and do all that stuff with him. She was lucky.

Still, Tonks was a bit taken off guard by the hug but she managed to not topple off her bed as her friend hugged her. "Oi, it's okay." Tonks assured her, even though it really wasn't. It really, really wasn't okay at all. "I mean -- it's just" she struggled with the words, "I'm not really gone back there, you know. I reckon I'm still hanging about, looking out for you lot. Plus, I bet my kid grows up to be wicked awesome and all." she offered, holding back a sniffle. "It happens and you and Charlie, you two are okay. I don't -- if you two hadn't -- I mean." Tonks shook her head. "Just I can't believe .. Remus." she shook her head. Part of her was glad she hadn't made it if Remus didn't either. It was a small, self-fish part of her but it was still a part of her.

Hestia hadn't been at her most emotionally stable lately. And she wasn't very stable to begin with. Hestia was a head case and anyone who knew her well could tell you that. Although anyone who knew her well would probably get right violent with anyone who suggested such a thing, but that didn't mean it wasn't true. So now this whole discussion about Tonks' death, again, was upsetting her again.

She actually teared up a little. "I'm sure Teddy is a fantastic bloke when he grows up. And when I saw him here he was brilliant."

And Tonks, of course, saw the tears and felt bad - like it was somehow her fault she was killed in battle. Tonks had a funny way of working things out. Looping an arm around her friend she gave her a hug. "Oi, don't be sad about it." Tonks said even though it was still eating away at her. "I'm happy Teddy's out and about and happy and he has you lot and a war free world and that's absolutely brill and you and Charlie are alright and have a million little kiddies and that's brill too so don't be sad because I'm here right now and we have this whole ship and all and I'll do my very best not to pop off again - scouts honor." she said softly, coaxing her friend to feel better with a calm and even voice.

Hestia had a tendency to overreact. They all knew it. They all had experienced it. It shouldn't have surprised anyone that she was doing it now. It didn't seem to surprise Tonks in any case. She went right on as if it was perfectly normal that Hes was having a sudden emotional breakdown. Although, all things considered, it probably was pretty normal. Nothing on this ship made much sense. "I don't think it works like that." Not that Hestia knew how it worked. Of course both Charlie and Tonks had appeared when Hestia was wishing and crying and begging the ship to bring them here. Maybe it was all about positive thinking. If so... they were doomed. Hestia was an eternal pessimist.

"I'll make it work like that." Tonks insisted stubbornly. "I swear to Merlin that I will do anything and everything in my power to stay aboard this crazy, wonderful ship and you do the same, alright? Pinky swear?" she asked, offering up her own pinky and raising a brow expectantly. Tonks was terribly depressed about finding out she died but right now she was here for Hestia and by God she was going to be good at that.

Hestia rolled her eyes, but lifted her pinky anyway. She wasn't sure she wanted to go back anyway. Hestia was the kind of girl who just kind of let the tide take her wherever it would. And right now it was on this ship. She wasn't fond of her future, not yet anyway, so she was pretty content here. At least Dora was here and not dead. That was awful. Yes, this place was much better. "Well, I don't want to go anywhere. So I guess you're stuck with me, Dora. Just like always."

Tonks grinned when Hestia relented and locked pinky's with her. Two victories in a row. Wicked.

"Stuck with you?" Tonks said with a bright smile and a laugh. "I'm not stuck with you, I've been blessed with your presence aboard this here wonder cruise and I'm so grateful you're here." Tonks said in a teasing tone before sobering up and looking at her friend.

"Seriously though, Hes, I'm so glad you're here." she admitted with a crooked smile.

If she had to be stuck on a ship, there was no one she'd rather be stuck here with than Dora. It was amazing she had survived so many years in the muggle world without her best mate. Although looking back at all she'd gone through, she had just barely survived it. So it was probably a good thing she had Tonks on this stupid ship or she might have more problems again.

"I'm glad you're here, too. I was only looking for you for days and days and days." An exaggeration, of course. She'd only disappeared a week or so ago. But it was nice to know she was here and Hestia didn't have to be alone if she didn't want to be. (Which she never wanted to be.)

Tonks let out a laugh, "Well, if this me had been here I would've been right there. As it is, from now on, I'm going to be right here. Promise, pinky promise. You can't break those so if I do disappear, which I won't but if I do, I give you permission to pop me one when I pop back up, yeah?" Tonks said with a small laugh and a bright smile.

So long as Tonks was here, Hes wouldn't ever have to be alone unless she wanted to that is.

Hestia wasn't sure that the previous Tonks had really understood what was going on with Hestia. It wasn't entirely her fault. Hestia had hid a lot of things from Dora until nearly the end of the war. This Dora was probably only aware of them very recently in her time. But it just amazed Hestia how different her friend was then and now. It was like she had matured twenty years in just two or three. But apparently war does that to people. "Dora, when did we grow up? I don't even remember doing it."

Tonks could only shrug. It had all happened so fast. She was a school girl once second and graduating another, and then her life all turned around when she started training to be an auror. She made her connections to the Order through there and thus met her husband and thus had her child. She grew up in a flash, really.

"I don't know, really. It just sort of .. happened I guess. It feels like we were just graduating yesterday." she said with a sigh, sitting indian style on her bed and propping her chin in her hand.

Hestia reached over and snatched her pillow back. She stuffed it under her head and tucked her arms above herself. She was sleepy again. Emotional outbursts were exhausting. Especially Hestia's because everything with Hes was as intense as it could be. She was much too over-dramatic.

"Things were so much easier when we were in school." There hadn't been a war, for one. Well, not that they were aware of. The biggest problems were Hestia's indiscretion with that teacher. Which, sure, it was huge, but it paled in comparison to the war... to Dora's death.

Tonks shrugged again before nodding her head. "More or less" she replied. Of course, in school Tonks had received many a detention and gotten in many a fight and often times had to hide behind Charlie or Hestia because she was about to be in trouble. It was good times though, fun years. She smiled a bit remembering them.

"I don't know if fun is the right word." Hestia kinda smirked. She let her eyes close, getting comfortable where she was. "If I remember correctly, we got into a lot of trouble." Hestia paused, smirking a bit and peeking out of the corner of her eye at Dora. "Well... you two got in trouble and I got dragged down with you!" Hestia had been in detention more than she should have been thanks to Dora and Charlie's shenanigans.

"Yeah - you did .. thanks for that." Tonks said with a small smile as she closed her eyes. She was tired. She had just arrived on this crazy boat and her mind had been working overtime it was time to rest but she didn't want to rest alone. The only time she was ever alone at nights was during the full moons and even now, she had Teddy.

Hestia kind of snorted. That was a stupid question at this point. She was pretty close to passing out right now. "I'm not going anywhere, Dora." She certainly didn't want to go back to Charlie's bed right now. But more than that she could tell Dora didn't want her to leave. So she was going to stay for that reason mostly.
